The Mazahua Mission

Based, at the Hacienda de Tepetitlan, in the Mexican state of Mexico. It is in Mexico that the hacienda system can be considered to have its origin in 1529, when the Spanish crown granted to Hernan Cortes the title of Marquis of the Valley of Oaxaca. Haciendas originated in land grants, mostly made to minor nobles from Spain.

Significantly, the grant included all the Indians then living on the land and power of life and death over every soul on his domains. There was no court of appeals governing a hacienda. Built in 1718, the Hacienda of Tepetitlan was at one time sprawled out across 24,710 acres of Mexican land.

Tepetitlan was known for its fine bulls and bountiful harvest of wheat. Annually, 9,000 head of bovine and 10,000 head of sheep we sold and shipped to stockyards in Mexico City. The hacienda sold 1,771,000 kilos of wheat annually. The irrigation system was immense with several dozen dams and 23 kilometers of canals that crisscrossed fields. Under the hacienda's owner, the hacendado, the Indians worked like beasts from sunrise to sunset, six days a week. The women got paid 7 cents a week and the men 42 cents a week.Just as God is a Father to the fatherless and a refuge for orphans and widows, here at Mission Mazahua we seek to love and serve those whom society and history have largely marginalized.

The Mazahua are an indigenous people who have historically been subservient to and dependent upon other people groups.

By working alongside the Mazahua to meet their physical needs and promote self-sufficiency and independence, we are given a chance to live out our own faith while promoting a life-changing Christianity among those whom we serve.
